Last Day in DC

Day four of our trip and we were getting tired but we had a tour of the Capital scheduled. After checking out of the hotel we made our way via metro to the Capital. Dave works for Senator Grassley from Iowa so our first stop was to meet him in his office. Afterwards one of his interns took us on the tour. We were with a couple other people who were really into knowing the in's and out's of the building with all the history. Usually we don't mind hearing that but since we couldn't take the stroller with us the twins were not the best tourists during the tour.
In Senator Grassely's office, Luke is sleeping! He is a senior senator so his office was pretty big and really nice!
We started out by taking a underground train from the Senator's office to the capital...it is the way they travel when they are in session. Then we went on the tour. We don't remember too much of it because we were walking around with the twins seeing it from their eyes.
Luke stepping on the lucky stone, if you step on it you are suppose to have good luck. He did a little dance so we hope it brings us lots of luck.
Who cares about the paintings on the wall...we love this grate on the floor!
Family picture in the rotunda...it was really pretty in there with lots of pictures and statues.

The train ride was so much fun!!
After the tour we walked over to Union Station and met Maggie and Dave for lunch. Abby was so tired she slept through the entire meal. We said good-bye and thanked them for such a wonderful trip. We had about 3 hours to kill before we needed to be at the airport so we got back on the metro and went to the Smithsonian. This time we went to the Natural History Museum. We walked through the Ocean and Dinosaur area...this time Luke was fast asleep and we were all wishing we had a stroller to sit in and take a snooze.
Mom and Abby looking at the Coral exhibit
Dad and the twins.
After the museum Grandma, the twins and I found a shaded grassy spot to sit and play while dad went to get our luggage. We were all ready to go home our feet were tired from all the walking we did. We finally made it to the airport after a long metro ride, got checked in only to find out that we were all seated apart on the plane. We were now running late so the twins didn't have much time to play before the flight. We loaded up with food and got on the plane. That is when we learned that there was a horrible metro accident. Two trains collided and 7 people died with many others injured. We had been riding the trains all weekend and they seemed so safe. The accident happened on a line that we never rode on but it was really frightening to think about.
The plane ride home went well...they twins both played and ate for the first half of the flight then after we put their jammies on they both slept for the rest of the flight. We are lucky to have such good travelers.
We had a fabulous time in Washington DC!! We were ready to be home but are already looking forward to our next trip out there.
