And we're back. Sam has managed to access the Internet from the NICU - shhhh don't tell anyone :). Those looking for pictures I won't have them up today, but hopefully tomorrow. So here's the latest and greatest with Team Penn.
1) Dad took mom and Abigail home on Monday night about 7pm. This was a very bittersweet moment and met with resistance from all family members as we knew we weren't complete. Abigail got to meet Dexter dog and immediately he tried to lick her face which dad did his best to fend off. Eventually Dexter warmed to the new addition to the family and has become Abby's biggest protector. Abby is doing great getting accustomed to her new digs, enjoying all of the space while she can. I have heard that Abby had her first bath at home, something I wish I could have been home for but we had other business to tend to.
2) Mom is doing well. It is great for her to be at home with Abby and her parents to get adjusted to everything. I think the reality is setting in for Kim that our bed isn't quite as nice or customizable as the hospital beds. I really think she wants me to sneak one out and get it home for her (can't get those - but I have a crap load of gauze, tape and bottles - hollar at me if you need any of those items!). Mom and Abby had a good first night at home trying to feed and follow the sleep patterns, or lack there of. I was told that Abby didn't really sleep, so neither did mom or grandma. Have to say thanks to grandma for the assist while dad wasn't there to help out - THANKS!
3) Lucas is doing great! However we are still in the NICU as of 7:30am this morning. I am currently writing in anticipation of the doctor's visit where he'll decide if we can go home today or if its another 24 hours to go (all i can think of are the song lyrics 24 hours to go, gonna be sedated). So we'll see what happens here shortly. If Luke is allowed to venture outside the NICU for the first time we'll definitely be posting and celebrating tonight! The reasons behind Luke's delayed departure include, low birth weight and gain, low pulse/oxygen levels, and inconsistent feeding patterns. All of these items seem to be some of the least reasons to be in the NICU compared to some of the other kiddos here, but it seems to be a necessary precaution to get our son home healthy. After 6 days and nights in the NICU I'd say I've seen and heard quite a bit about the reasons for the other children being here, all very sad, humbling and make me so thankful for where we are. I think its wise at this time to take a moment, say a prayer for all the children in this and various NICU's as these children have quite a fight ahead of them and could use any assistance they can get. Luke and I have again gotten to share this special experience as I have been bedside for him since he was admitted making us both miss mom and abby even more. I have made the trip home to take Kim and Abby and again yesterday to see the light of day - both times seemed to be entirely too long to be away from our little man.
I think that's the best I can muster for this update. We are very thankful for the blessings, thoughts and prayers of all our family and friends. Again, we will do our best to get updates back out to everyone as soon as we can and Team Penn can't wait to have visitors once again - only this time to a house filled with our family. I hope that all of you are doing well and that your days are bringing you nothing but happiness. Blog at you soon.
